Dallas, TX – An extraordinary scene is set to unfold as close to 40 first responder vehicles from across nine counties in the Diocese of Dallas will gather for a heartfelt “Blessing of the Fleet” ceremony. This special event is a tribute to the brave men and women who protect and serve our communities.
On Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 9 a.m., first responders throughout the Diocese of Dallas will unite at the National Shrine Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 2215 Ross Avenue. The occasion will feature a celebration of the Diocese of Dallas Blue Mass by Bishop Edward J. Burns.
Personnel from the Dallas Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, Dallas Fire-Rescue Department, EMS, DART, 9-1-1 dispatchers, and other North Texas law enforcement and first responder agencies will participate in this significant event.
Bishop Burns will preside over the “Blessing of the Fleet” at 9:00 a.m., before the celebration of the 10 a.m. Mass. He will bless patrol cars, fire engines, other service vehicles, bicycles, mounted horse patrols, and canine units with holy water. This ceremony will take place at the corner of Crockett Street and Ross Avenue, in front of the cathedral in downtown Dallas.
The Blue Mass honors those who are actively serving as first responders and commemorates those who have fallen in the line of duty. Named for the color of the uniforms predominantly worn by many first responders, the tradition of the Blue Mass dates back to 1934 when Rev. Thomas Dade initiated the service in Washington, D.C., as part of his duties with the Catholic Police and Fireman’s Society.
Members of the Dallas Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, Dallas Fire- Rescue Department, and DART Police collaborated with the Diocese of Dallas team members to plan this meaningful event.
