A Message for Our Diocesan Community

A Message for Our Diocesan Community

August 27,2025

Dear Parents and Families,

This morning, we received the heartbreaking news of a tragic school shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. Our hearts are heavy as we grieve with the families, staff, and community impacted by this senseless act of violence. Please join us in lifting them in prayer, asking our Lord to receive into His loving embrace the children who lost their lives, healing to those who were injured, and comfort to all who mourn.

We know that events like this understandably cause deep concern among our own families here in the Diocese of Dallas. Parents have been reaching out with questions about the safety of our children at school and during Mass. We want to assure you that the safety and well-being of your children is our highest priority.

We recognize that you entrust your most precious gifts—your children—into our care for their education and formation. We take this sacred responsibility with the deepest seriousness and with great affection and commitment to their protection.

Our diocesan security team (led by Manuel Sanchez and José Muñoz, both former law enforcement officers and trainers), has been working closely with our parishes and schools to develop, strengthen, and regularly review safety protocols. These measures are in place to protect our students, faculty, and parishioners. We are deeply committed to maintaining secure environments where our children can learn, pray, and grow in faith without fear.

Please know that we are vigilant and proactive in our approach to security. We encourage all members of our community—students, staff, and families—to remain attentive and to speak up if something seems concerning. Together, we can create the safest possible environment for our children.

At the same time, we remember that our schools are not only places of learning but also communities of faith and hope. In these difficult times, we are called to be people of prayer and witnesses of Christ’s love. We entrust our schools and parishes to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking her intercession to protect our children and guide us in fostering peace.

Thank you for your trust and partnership as we continue to work together to care for what is most precious—our children.

With prayers and blessings,

Most Reverend Edward J. Burns
Bishop of Dallas
