Primary Function
The Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (CYYAM) responds to the spiritual, religious, social, and cultural needs of the youth and young adults at St. Rita Catholic Community, specifically serving high school age youth and young adults in their 20s-30s. Working under the direction of the Pastor, the immediate supervision of the Director of Faith Formation (DFF), and in collaboration with St. Rita staff and volunteers, this position sets out to build and maintain a community of holiness wherein the youth and young adults of St. Rita come to own and deepen their Catholic faith so that they will be strengthened for discipleship now and into their adult lives. This position develops and coordinates creative, vibrant, and faithful youth (and young adult) activities in the Parish, but primarily grows and develops strong Christian disciples who are excited and equipped to live their Catholic faith not only at St. Rita but in the wider Church and the world.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
• Facilitates and develops the St. Rita Youth Council (SRYC), which is charged with envisioning,
planning, and implementing a comprehensive youth ministry effort for St. Rita Catholic Community.
With the SRYC, the CYYAM develops and guides a Youth Leadership Team to help serve youth
ministry initiatives at St. Rita.
• With the Director of Faith Formation and Assistant Director of Middle School Ministry, facilitates the
organization, preparation, and implementation of sacramental preparation (OCIA) for youth in
grades 9 – 12.
• Develops volunteer leaders from throughout St. Rita Catholic Community by recruiting and training
suitable persons for such ministry.
• Plans and executes regular opportunities for worship, spiritual growth, and fellowship such as Bible
studies, other faith studies, worship, retreats, pilgrimages, etc.
• Assists the Office of Faith Formation and St. Rita Catholic School in preparing youth for
Confirmation.
• Builds communion among parochial and public-school children, attending various school events and
other extracurricular activities in which St. Rita youth participate.
• Builds communion among youth from every culture and ethnicity belonging to St. Rita Catholic
Community, especially among Anglo and Hispanic youth, facilitating opportunities that strengthen
multicultural awareness and celebration.
• Integrates youth within wider Parish life by inviting them to serve (when age appropriate) as Altar
servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Readers, etc.
• Fosters a sense of vocation among youth, especially to the Priesthood and Religious life; but also
fosters a broader sense of vocation to married life as well as an understanding of Catholic
responsibility in the world in light of Catholic Social Teaching and the universal call to holiness.
• Fosters a pro-life culture among youth through faithful and clear Catholic teaching and action,
participating in pro-life events, pro-life learning opportunities, etc.
• Fosters a culture of justice among youth through faithful and clear Catholic Social Teaching and by
getting involved in Parish, Diocesan, local, national, and even international mission and justice
initiatives, e.g., serving the poor, facilitating justice learning opportunities, etc.
• Serves as a resource to the Parish on youth issues and youth ministries.
• Liaises with the Pastor, relevant Parish councils, Parish and School Staff on youth issues and youth
ministries, working collaboratively with the Faith Formation Department and St. Rita Catholic
School.
• Supports and serves the various Parish organizations that share responsibility for youth ministries.
• Maintains contact with the Diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, maintaining
familiarity with Diocesan guidelines, attending Diocesan and other extra-parochial meetings helpful
to ministry.
Administration
• Meets regularly with the SRYC and other Parish and School leaders to collaborate in long-range
planning and evaluation of youth ministries at St. Rita Catholic Community.
• Provides up-do-date progress reports to the Parish and School leaders as necessary.
• Maintains filing and record-keeping system for appropriate youth ministry programs in
collaboration with the Office of Faith Formation and St. Rita Catholic School.
• Follows office procedures in the Parish and School.
• Participates in monthly Parish Staff meetings as well as periods of staff prayer and retreat.
• Responsible for youth ministries budget (planning and accounting).
• Maintain compliance by the Youth Ministry Office with Diocesan safety polices and Parish and
School policies
Qualifications
• A fully initiated Catholic in good standing with the Church.
• One who agrees with all magisterial Catholic teaching and joyfully and obediently lives out his or
her Catholic faith.
• Has obtained either a Bachelor’s degree and/or a Master’s degree in a discipline relatable to
Catholic ministry (theology, ministry, religious studies, education, etc.).
• Has at least 2-5 years’ experience in youth ministry or another relatable ministry or field.
• Familiar with youth culture and trends and also relevant evangelical and catechetical best
practices.
• Exhibits multicultural competency and empathy; bilingual skills (English and Spanish) are a
bonus.
• A passionate and charismatic individual; able to draw young people to Christ and his Church.
