General Summary of the Position

 

The Music Director at St. Patrick Catholic Parish creates a welcoming musical experience that both provides life-changing encounters with Jesus Christ and forms missionary disciples who transform the world for Christ, one person at a time.

It’s our expectation that this minister seeks to love God and helps other people to know, love and serve God. The one who sings prays twice. This quality will be a part of the character of the music and liturgical ministry of this director.

The Music Director performs all duties/functions relevant to the traditional, Spanish, contemporary, youth and/or other choir music programs; works to coordinate all aspects of choir music for liturgical and worship services of the parish community; and works with the Pastor and Director of Liturgy & Worship to ensure that the detail for each liturgy is prepared. Works collaboratively with volunteers and other staff members. Consults with the Pastor and Director of Liturgy & Worship in carrying out these duties for the smooth functioning of relevant parish activities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

 

· Plans, implements or supervises all aspects of the music for the traditional, contemporary, youth and other choirs in Liturgical Services and other parish activities. · Conducts and/or accompanies at English Masses 5 p.m., 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. masses each weekend, and schedules Spanish Musicians for Spanish Mass, oversees other choirs, coordinates with SPS School for Children’s choir performances at select masses. · Recruits new members.

· Responsible for coordinating and staffing all other liturgies with competent musicians.

· Handles organizational matters, including organizing and filing of music library. · Plans or approves music for all community liturgies, procures sufficient music copies as needed for choir and congregation. · Works with R.C.I.A. and other staff persons in planning for special rites/music in liturgies relevant to their work, as necessary. · Conducts rehearsals and liturgy services as designated for assigned choir(s) activities; arranges for substitute when unable to be present. · Supervises and directs keyboardists, instrumentalists, choir members. · Works with all musicians in ministry for parish liturgical services and other special occasions, planning music and arrangements, directing duties and functions concerning same. · Works with Director of Liturgy& Worship to create Worship Aids with complete music for Sunday Masses and printed worship aids for other important bilingual liturgies in the community, i.e. Triduum, Parish Feast Days, etc. · Develops annual budget for the parish music program as part of the Liturgy Commission budget. · Purchases, upon approval, catalogues, repairs and manages all printed music materials, library holdings for assigned choir(s) and congregation as needed. · Helps to develop a master plan for long-range direction of parish liturgy/music program. · Helps coordinate and plan the music for special feasts, services and functions in the parish/church, working in consultation with the Pastor and Director of Liturgy & Worship and other music staff personnel as requested (especially when 2 or more choirs are singing at the same liturgy/function). · Helps in training and implementing cantor program, working in conjunction with the choir leaders at the different masses. · Works cooperatively with music/choir directors/ministers of other parishes in planning, participation in and/or implementing special diocesan choral music programs, presentations or functions as indicated/as requested by the Pastor or the Bishop. · Keeps current in regard to trends and directions of sacred/church music in the Catholic Church to assure music used in parish liturgical services and special activities is appropriate and in accordance with church tradition and current practices and dictates of church authorities. · Facilitates in the planning details of liturgical celebrations, special feasts and other occasions in the parish, assisting in preparation and implementation of same. · Works cooperatively with parish staff and maintains Christian attitude/behavior in dealings with all clergies, parish members and the community in general, as a representative of the Catholic parish community. · Maintains positive working relationship with the Diocesan Office of Worship, prayerfully considering requests to provide music at Liturgies. · Responsible for other duties, as assigned or deemed necessary by the Pastor, Director of Operations and Director of Liturgy & Worship

· Responsible for creating and coordinating Children’s Choir and Handbell Choir.

 

Education and Experience:

 

Knowledge of liturgical services, worship and special functions of the Roman Catholic Church preferred.

Experience and proficiency in playing a church organ required.

Bachelor’s degree in music (training in choral organization & administration preferred). Experience in directing/conducting, singing and accompanying church music. Experience as a team member in working with plans and development of church music programs helpful.

English/Spanish Bilingual a plus. Must foster a community of respect across the music ministry, maintaining an open mind to differing styles of music which appeal to different choirs or groups.

Must be an excellent communicator and collaborator with volunteers in Music and Liturgy

· To be a disciple of Jesus Christ and live a life of daily prayer and weekly sacraments. · Encourages participation among those in the pews especially though singing by way of choice of music and musical style.
