Primary Function

The Coordinator of Children Faith Formation responds to the spiritual, social and cultural needs of the children of the parish up to 5th grade, working under the direction of the Pastor, the immediate supervision of the Director of Faith Formation, and in collaboration with the Faith Formation staff, school faculty, and volunteers of the parish. This position coordinates the catechetical program and activities, sacramental preparation for reconciliation and first communion, RCIA adapted for children, and Vacation Bible School (VBS).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Alongside the Director of Faith Formation and Faith Formation team, articulates a vision and direction for the parish’s evangelical and catechetical approach for children up to 5th grade and their families.
• Develops, implements, and supports effective, responsive, and age-appropriate religious education and sacramental preparation programming for children and their families.
• Evaluates and assesses the current program as well as needs of the parish, to develops goals, objectives, and strategies for the children’s faith formation program.
• Works collaboratively with clergy and faculty to support the sacramental preparation and family ministry efforts of St. Rita School.
• Coordinates liturgical celebrations for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, 1st Eucharist, and RCIA adapted for children.
• Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates ministry volunteers.
• Acts as an advocate within the parish for children and their families providing evaluation and feedback to the appropriate parish leadership.
• Maintain regular and effective communication with participants, parents and the parish at large to keep them informed of the parish’s ministry efforts and opportunities pertaining to children’s faith formation.
• Coordinates family centered faith formation activities.
• Provide oversight and support to the Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW).
• Obtains and curates resources that complement the children faith formation efforts of the parish and school.
• Where possible, and working directly with affected parents, assist in the development and teaching of religious education to children with special needs.
• Maintains appropriate record keeping of facilities reservations, classes, attendance, sacraments, materials and supplies etc.
• Prepares a yearly calendar of events prior to program start-up and communicates such to parents and parish staff .
• In collaboration with the Business Manager, creates and monitors a departmental budget, including accounting for registration fees, billing, and accounts payable.
• Collaborates with the Director of Safe Environment in compliance with the Diocesan (and parish) safety program.
• Maintains contact with the Diocesan Office of Catechetical Ministries, gains and maintains familiarity with the diocesan guidelines, and attends diocesan and regional meetings.
• Remains current on best practices and effective methods for evangelizing, catechizing, and ministering to children and their families. Including developments in the fields of child psychology/development and curriculum.
• Attends parish staff meetings, retreats and events.
• Other administrative duties which may from time to time be reasonably assigned at St. Rita Catholic Community.

Related Duties

RCIA Adapted for Children

• Maintain a fruitful and responsive formation program for children’s sacramental preparation, coinciding with the ministry of Children’s Faith Formation.
• Assist in the updating, maintenance, correction, and reporting of Sacramental records to parishioners, the Diocese, and in the Parish’s Sacraments Register.

Vacation Bible School

• Facilitate the visioning, planning, and conducting of Vacation Bible School.
• Manage registration, coordinate age groups, and assist in gathering materials for volunteers.
• Facilitate volunteers’ meetings prior to VBS.
• Participate, with the Faith Formation team, in coordinating Youth Volunteers and general troubleshooting during the week of VBS.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in theology/pastoral ministry or related field.
• 2-5 years experience in pastoral ministry, children or family ministry preferred. Both professional and volunteer experience are acceptable.
• Knowledge of Spanish preferred but not essential.
• Flexible work week; requires some nights and weekends (Sunday morning and Wednesday evening during academic year).
